Rockets from Tipu Sultan’s ammunition storage?
1,000 rockets from ‘Tipu era’ unearthed in K’taka, July 29, 2018: The Times of India
More than 1,000 rockets, believed to be from Tipu Sultan’s ammunition storage, have been excavated from a well in Nagara village of Karnataka’s Shivamogga district.
The department of archaeology, museums and heritage, which conducted the excavations on July 25 and 26, found the rockets from the land owned by farmer Nagaraj Rao. The department’s assistant director R Shejeswara said Rao had found at least 160 rockets in 2002 when he was clearing the well.
“When Nagaraj Rao was clearing the mud and slush from his empty well in 2002, he found 160 rockets. Iron items and ammunition were also recovered from the spot. We carried out scientific examinations on these items in 2007,” he said, adding that they had planned the current excavation and were expecting to recover another 200 rockets.
The authorities said they’re yet to ascertain the age of these rockets and why they were buried in the well. “Even though rocket technology was first developed by Tipu Sultan, there’s no evidence that these rockets belong to him. A detailed analysis is required to confirm it. We’ll shift them to the Government Museum, Shivappanayaka Palace in Shivamogga for research,” Shejeswara added.
