Capital of the State of the same name in Central India, situated in 23° 43' N. and 77° 6' E., 1,650 feet above the sea, 44 miles from Sehore. Population (1901), 8,778. It was founded by Paras Ram, first chief of Narsinghgarh, in 1681, on the site of the village of Toplia Mahadeo. The town is most picturesquely situated on the edge of an artificial lake, with a fort and palaces on the heights above. A dispensary, a school, a jail, and British combined post and telegraph offices are situated in the town.
