2016: Flipkart led in hits, but Amazon narrowed gap

Anand J, Dec 23 2016: The Times of India

Amazon has led Flipkart in terms of app downloads throughout the year, but Flipkart is holding on to its leading position in the e-commerce battle, according to data from various tracking platforms. While Amazon led Flipkart in PC visits and mobile web visits, Flipkart, together with subsidiaries Myntra and Jabong, still attracts 25% more traffic than Amazon, according to website tracking firm comScore. Flipkart also continues to lead in cumulative app downloads.

In 2016, Amazon has registered total app downloads of 3.2 crore, while Flipkart had 2.7 crore, shows data from App Annie, an app metrics tracking website. While the companies don't reveal the cumulative app installed base, TOI estimates that Flipkart has around 8 crore downloads while Amazon's is a little less than 6 crore.

In January this year, Flipkart had led Amazon marginally in desktop visits and had double the overall app installed base. This means Amazon has narrowed the gap significantly over the year. Amazon's desktop and mobile website visits are more than 50% higher than Flipkart's (excluding Myntra and Jabong), as per website tracking firm Similar Web. But e-commerce players get less than 25% of their overall traffic from websites. Over 75% comes from mobile apps.
