Pauk Township

Central township of Pakokku District, Upper Burma, lying between 21 10' and 21 49' N. and 94 18 and 94 44' E., with an area of 1,490 square miles. It is a rugged tract, bounded on either side by hill ranges, and watered by the Kyaw river, a considerable affluent of the Yaw, which flows through its southern areas. Along these two streams a considerable amount of rice is grown. The population was 36,515 in 1891, and 41,021 in 1901, distributed in 190 villages. Pauk (population, 1,826), a village near the junction of the Kyaw and Yaw streams, about 40 miles west of Pakokku, is the head-quarters. The area cultivated in 1903-4 was 42 square miles, and the land revenue and thathameda amounted to Rs. 94,000.
