MADURAI: Two small spears of gold and copper that have been taken in an annual ritual procession from Karaikudi to the Palani temple for the last 422 years went missing during this year's event on January 14.

The nagarathar (chettiars) of Karaikudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, and Sivaganga have been going on the pilgrimage carrying the 3.5-cm-long spears since 1601. This year too they reached Natham on January 13 and stayed at the traditional mandapam attached to the Perumal temple there.TNN

Two spears were hurriedly made to save pilgrimage

The spears were kept in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple in a silver box. But they were missing the next morning. The Natham police are investigating.

As the pilgrimage could not be continued without the spears, two were hurriedly made and the procession continued after a delay. The procession usually reaches Palani the day before Thaipoosam, which falls in January 18 this year, and stays at the foothills. The pilgrims perform rituals at the Dandayuthapani temple the day after Thaipoosam. This year as the journey got delayed, the pilgrims are walking through the night to make up time. During the rest of the year, the spears are kept at the ancestral home of Kumarappan Chettiar of Nerkuppai. It is from there that the pilgrimage is taken out every year.
