First GM norm at 13

City boy Prithu earns first GM norm at 13, March 21, 2018: The Times of India

Thirteen-yearold Delhi schoolboy Prithu Gupta has bagged his maiden GM norm recently during the Gibraltar Masters tournament, where he also became the International Master.

Prithu achieved his norm with two rounds to spare, which took his ELO Rating above 2400 oints (2450) necessary for the IM title. Earlier, Prithu had logged first IM norm in June, 2017 at the Silverlake Open in Serbia and second norm at the Golden Prague chess festival in July.

Having started playing chess only four years back, Prithu has had a good record, having drawn with world No 23, GM Le QuangLiem (rated 2737 from Vietnam) and GM ItturizagaBonelli Eduardo (rated 2650 from Venezuela). His victims also include French GM Fabien Libiszewski, and a hat-trick of draws against GMs Anna Muzychuk (Ukraine), Svane Rasmus (Germany) and Perez Ponsa Federico (Argentina). Prithu is an eighth standard student of Modern School (Vasant Vihar) and the Delhi Chess Association felicitated him for his recent achievements.

2019: becomes India’s 64th GM

Viswanathan Anand — five-time world champion and India’s first Grandmaster — had stated during an event last week that he would be happy to see India get its 64th GM before he turns 50 later this year. “That would be my perfect birthday gift (as there are 64 squares in a chessboard),” Anand had said. The chess legend didn’t have to wait long as the country got its 64th member in the big boys’ league in Delhi’s Prithu Gupta.

Anand took to Twitter to congratulate Prithu. “And we are complete. 64th GM !! Welcome our newest GM Prithu Gupta!” Anand wrote. The Delhi boy, at 15 years, 4 months and 10 days, joined the game’s elite after defeating German IM Lev Yankelevich in Round 5 of the Portuguese league, thereby crossing the 2500 Elo rating mark.

Prithu had bagged his maiden GM norm at the Gibraltar Masters last year and soon got his second norm at the Biel Masters in 2018. The third and final GM norm for Prithu arrived at the Porticcio Open earlier this month. “The last few months have been a big test since I came close to getting my third GM norm but failed to do so. But it’s nice to have the monkey off the back. I feel becoming a GM is just part of my chess journey and not the final destination,” Prithu told TOI.
