A brief biography
2005-19
Dec 24, 2019 The Times of India
RPN Singh emerged as the face of the JMM-Congress alliance’s victory in Jharkhand, having steered coalition talks with the tribal outfit and then cornered a respectable tally for the national party with limited presence in the election-bound state.
As party in-charge of Jharkhand affairs, Singh ensured that Congress clinched the alliance talks with JMM in time to present the picture of a coherent coalition, unlike the past when seat-sharing spilled on to the campaign period and conveyed dissonance among allies.
During polls, the former Union minister stayed in the state continuously for 40 days, campaigning and taking care of nuts and bolts of electioneering in the faction-ridden organisation along the way.
It marked a sweet victory for the leader who became the butt of criticism in 2005 when he, as AICC secretary, played a role in the governor’s controversial invitation to JMM chief Shibu Soren to form the government despite the rival BJP alliance having submitted a list of majority MLAs to Raj Bhavan. Later, a BJP government was sworn in under Arjun Munda.
