Aditya Chopra

Rani Mukerji and her very discreet, invisible lover Aditya Chopra had kept their relationship under wraps from the entire world, got married the same way too. Rani and Yash Raj Film's head honcho tied the knot in Italy on April 21, 2014. The ceremony was attended by close friends and family only.

Rani Mukerji issued a statement the next day that said "I would like to share the happiest day of my life with all my fans all over the world whose love and blessings have been part of my journey all these years. I know that all my well-wishers who have waited for this day will be really happy for me. It was a beautiful wedding in the Italian countryside with just a few of our close family and friends with us. The one person I missed terribly was Yash Uncle, but I know he was there with us in spirit and his love and blessings will always be with Adi and me. I have always believed in fairy-tales and with God’s grace my life has been exactly like one, and now as I enter the most important chapter of my life - the fairy-tale continues."

Rani Mukerji who turned 36 on 20th March 2014, a few weeks before the wedding, tied the knot with her long time boyfriend Aditya Chopra. A 42-year-old Aditya Chopra has always been very discreet about his personal life and hence the couple's decision to get married away from the glaring eyes of the media in Italy was the obvious choice. Unlike her lover, Rani could not remain so discreet about her love life and the media could get enough fodder from the hints that Rani dropped occasionally. Rani was seen at Aditya Chopra's father Yash Chopra's funeral and attended all the ceremonies like a family member.

Even though Aditya Chopra preferred staying within the confines of his bungalow and office, the camera followed Rani and she was once snapped celebrating Diwali at the Chopra mansion. A rare picture of Rani feeding Aditya during the Diwali celebrations was also leaked. The couple was snapped sometimes coming out of the airport.

But one thing that added more fuel to fire was when at the event where Yash Chopra's memorial statue was unveiled, actor Shatrughan Sinha who was also present there addressed Rani Mukerji as "Rani Chopra". He went further and said "Aditya Chopra ko koi kaise bhool sakta hai. Aur jabki maine baaki kuch naam liye hain, Rani Chopra ka bhi naam liya toh zahir hai Aditya Chopra ka naam aa gaya". Well, before the couple could come out in the open about their love life, Shatrughan Sinha let out Bollywood's best kept secret!

When asked about the man- Aditya Chopra in her life, Rani in an interview had once said "The good part is that it is constant. I’m glad I’m being linked with just one person not many. I enjoy that ‘constant'." But things haven't been hunky-dory for the couple always. If rumours are anything to go by then, Aditya Chopra and Rani Mukerji's relationship didn't go down well with Adi's parents Yash and Pamela Chopra. Aditya was married to his childhood sweetheart Payal Khanna when actress Rani Mukerji came into his life. Aditya and Payal got married in 2001 but his relationship with Rani ended Payal and Aditya's relationship. It took Adi's parents allegedly a long time before they accepted Rani Mukerji as their future daughter-in-law as they were close to Payal. Aditya Chopra finally got divorced from his first wife Payal Khanna in 2009.

It was believed that Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra got engaged sometime back. The huge rock on Rani's finger was probably what kick-started the rumour. It was also rumoured that the couple was living in together for two years [2012-14] at Rani Mukerji's bungalow in Juhu. Aditya has been spotted several times coming out of Rani's bungalow. Recently, the couple made headlines when Aditya gave his ladylove an expensive Audi car. Rani and Aditya's love story has always remained a mystery and the two have never spoken about it in the media.

Rani Mukerji called her love story with Aditya Chopra a 'fairy-tale' one in the official statement issued by the actress. The two may have gotten married to each other in Italy to avoid the intrusion of the media .

What triggered their sudden decision to marry?

Three weeks before the wedding, Rani's father Ram Mukerji, who is fitted with a pacemaker, collapsed and was immediately hospitalised. He kept repeating, "The only thing I want before anything untoward happens to me is to see my daughter married". And, in what can only be described as true filmi style, standing by his bedside, Adi promised the senior Mukerji that the dilwala would take his dulhaniya away, with the blessings of both their parents.

On the Friday before the wedding, the Mukerjis and the Chopras decided that the venue would be Italy. On Saturday night, Krishna, Ram and Raja Mukerji took a flight as did Pam and Uday Chopra. Karan Johar also flew the same night. A priest accompanied the families and the wedding took place according to Bengali tradition.

An insider says, "We knew that the marriage was taking place this weekend. Pam cancelled the usual Saturday film screening that she holds at Yash Raj Films (YRF) for the khandaan. No friends or relatives other than the immediate family were alerted about the wedding."

Of course, everyone knew that this would be the final outcome.

After all, Rani is addressed as 'malkin' (mistress/owner) by all and sundry at YRF. She had been reportedly living in with Adi at his Vikas Park residence, which is diagonally opposite her own Theosophical Colony home, for years now.

Also, Adi has been attending the annual Ganpati Puja at Rani's residence for the last few years; he was even spotted walking hand-in-hand with the light-eyed actress (seems like an improbability because he is so phantom-like) in her compound. The couple holidayed in London every year. And, it was Rani who sat in the puja with Adi, when they performed a havan to mark Yash Chopra's first death anniversary.

Rani's family, as has often been reported in Bombay Times (The Times of India), is more important than that of the Pope's at Yash Raj. Her brother Raja has bagged a job at YRF. Her mother Krishna, nattily dressed in kurtis and skirts, is the one looking after Pam at the weekly film screenings. And, domestic help flies in and out of the screenings looking after Rani's niece (her brother Raja and bhabhi Jyothi's child).

5 Hints that Rani-Aditya were already married

Rani Mukherji and Aditya Chopra finally tied a knot on April 21st, away from the prying eyes of the media. But their love life has been the favourite subject for discussion. Over the years, Aditya Chopra has done several things for his lady love. Aditya gifted a plush Audi to Rani. His production house, Yash Raj Films is also producing Mardaani for the actress, to give Rani's film career the much needed push. Also Rani Mukerji, who celebrates Diwali at Aditya's bungalow, was caught on the camera lens feeding Aditya. According to reports, they were also spotted together once while returning from a holiday abroad.

Over the years, Rani Mukerji has become an important member of the Chopra clan. Rani was very close to Yash Chopra, and missed him immensely on her wedding to his son. Every year on Yash Chopra's birthday, Rani used to bake special cakes for him. She was also consoling Aditya and Uday during their weak moment in the family. Also like a true saas-bahu jodi, Rani accompanied Pamela Chopra to the prayer meet for Madhuri Dixit's father who passed away in 2013.

An elaborate prayer meet was held for Yash Chopra at Yash Raj Studios. At that time, a teary Rani Mukerji stood alongside the Chopras like a family member. At another occasion, Shatrughan Singh expressed his condolences and made a blunder about a marriage in the Chopra clan. Shatrughan Sinha referred to Rani as Mrs Chopra, directly hinting that Aditya and Rani were already a married couple. Shatrughan Sinha might just have let out the truth, because reports suggest that Rani-Aditya were already engaged at that time.

A similar slip up happened by Yash Raj Film's blue eyed boy Ranveer Singh. The actor referred to Rani Mukerji as the MD of Yash Raj Films. The actor made this blunder while on Koffee with Karan. Ranveer is a regular at YRF, and what was said in jest might just be the truth. Gossip mills have also stated that Rani is referred to as Madamji at Yash Raj Studios and is also a decision maker there.

Salman Khan, who is known to speak his mind out also hinted at a wedding between Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra. Once jokingly, Rani had expressed a desire to get married to Salman Khan. And when Salman was told about the same he sarcastically said,"Iss mein 'adi' sachai hai." In a witty way, Salman stated that Rani was devoted to Aditya Chopra and that he is nowhere in the picture. He kept repeating the line, giving an impression that he knew a secret which was not meant for the world to know.

Rani's other friends

Rani Mukerjee has over the years been linked to actors like Govinda and Abhishek Bachchan. Rani's affair with Govinda got a lot of media attention. The already married actor was rumoured to be dating Rani Mukerji and a lot of media reports about their alleged affair sprouted up. It was alleged that Govinda used to splurge on Rani and buy her diamonds and other expensive gifts. But this rumoured affair died a natural death and media then linked Rani to Abhishek Bachchan. Abhishek and Rani were a hit onscreen pair and there were reports that Jaya Bachchan was very fond of the Bengali actress as well. However, Abhishek and Rani's 'love story' was crushed when Abhishek went ahead and tied the knot with Aishwarya Rai.

Rani Mukerji shot to fame with her song 'Aati Kya Khandala' opposite Aamir Khan. Aamir and Rani shared a steaming on-screen chemistry in Vikram Bhatt's Ghulam (1998). It was their sensuous chemistry that translated off-screen also and they were both rumoured to be in love. Also, it was during this time that Aamir's relationship with his first wife Reena went through a rough phase and they divorced. Rani Mukerji has gone on record and confessed to Glamsham, "I had a crush on Aamir Khan." She also said to an interview to Mid-day, "He is someone who I can call even at 3 in the night and ask for help." Well, nothing fruitful translated out of those rumours and they ended up as "just good friends".

Govinda, who met Rani Mukerji on the sets of Hadh Kar Di Aapne (2000), became quite close to Rani Mukerji, and reportedly got into an extra-marital affair with the heroine. Their affair turned out to be a scandal as Govinda was once spotted in Rani's room in a night dress, when a journalist had gone to visit Rani at her place, as reported by Masala.com. According to the rumours, Govinda had spent a lot of money in gifting her high-end car, diamonds and a luxurious flat. Later Govinda's wife Sunita moved out of their house and Govinda, unlike Boney Kapoor, was not prepared to move out of his marriage and marry Rani and they broke up. Although Rani and Govinda never officially admitted that they were in a relationship, Rani went on record to say the two had maintained a distance due to his wife Sunita. Well, all's well that ends well. Govinda is happy in his life and Rani is happily married to Aditya Chopra.

Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan started bonding when they did films like Yuva and Bunty Aur Babli together. But this rumoured affair of Rani Mukerji didn't last long. There were reports that Jaya Bachchan was very fond of the Bengali actress as well. However, Abhishek and Rani's 'love story' soon died down when the actor went ahead and married former Miss World Aishwarya Rai. Though the rumours about Rani and Abhsihek were strong, they soon fizzled. Unlike her friendship with other co-stars, Rani could not keep up the same equation with Abhishek Bachchan as well. Bachchans didn't invite Rani to Abhishek-Aishwarya wedding also, and see the coincidence that Rani got married to the next date on which Abhi-Aish celebrate their wedding anniversary.

Controversies

Most Shocking Controversies of Rani Mukerji

indiatimes / The Times of India

When Rani lashed out at Simi Garewal: Rani Mukerji might be a Bong beauty with a sweet smile. However, the actress has a fiery temper and can be very rude. When she came as a guest at Simi’s India’s Most Desirable, Rani showed her rude side to the audience. When she was persistently prodded to talk about her relationship with Aditya Chopra, she lost her cool and threatened the host to spill the beans about her secret life. She reportedly said, "There’s a lot I know about you too, which of course you wouldn’t want me to bring up.” Rumours suggest that initially the flow of the show was pretty smooth and it was all hunky dory. However, later things got heated up between the two and it all happened in front of the studio audience. Later the actress asked the production hose to delete that part of the episode.

Tension between Rani and Kajol: Gossipmongers have always hinted that the two cousins Rani Mukerji and Kajol are not very close. However, these rumours were proved right when Kajol was not invited for Jab Tak Hai Jaan’s premier in 2012. It was shocking as Kajol gave Yash Raj Films the biggest hit ever since its inception. Adiya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge actress was totally ignored at the gala premiere whereas all other lead actress of Yash Raj Films were invited. Since Rani was at the helm of affairs as far as the guest list of the premiere was concerned, it was speculated that she did not invite Kajol purposefully.

Aishwarya-Rani's cold war: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Rani Mukerji were good friends until Rani accepted Aishwarya's role in Shah Rukh Khan's Chalte Chalte without even informing her. This created tension between the two. Also there were speculations that Rani was once dating Abhishek Bachchan. And when Abhishek tied the knot with Aishwarya, the rift apparently became wider. If this was not enough, the two actresses have taken digs at each other in the past. While Aishwarya once made fun of Rani's garish makeup, Rani once commented on Aishwarya's weight that she had piled on post pregnancy. On the TV show Front Row, she was quoted as saying, "And, we believe we have to leave everything to bring up our children. Actresses need to pull up their socks and keep looking great and working out... and keep looking younger than what we are." Was she referring to Aishwarya? Well, IndiaTimes/ The Times of India pretty sure is.

Tension between Rani Mukerji and Jaya Bachchan: There was a time when Rani Mukerji was close to the Bachchans, especially Amitabh Bachchan. However, things became sour between her and Jaya when there were rumours about her affair with Abhishek Bachchan. It is said that Jaya did not approve of Rani and allegedly considered her too brash and loud to be a Bachchan bahu. In fact, rumours suggest that she asked her son to maintain a distance from Rani, which apparently led to their breakup. Things also turned for worse Rani when she was not invited for Abhishek-Aishwarya's wedding for obvious reasons. In fact, there were rumours that suggested a cold war between Jaya and Rani on the sets of Yash Raj Productions' Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag. It was said that Jaya avoided talking to Rani and had formed a group of sorts with Konkona Sen Sharma.

Spat between Rani Mukerji and Vivek Oberoi: Despite delivering a blockbuster hit together in 2002, Saathiya, they were not seen together in any movie except Yuva, where they were not cast opposite each other. This led gossip mongers to speculate what actually went wrong between the two. It is said that Rani and Aishwarya Rai were very close at one time until Vivek Oberoi started dating Aishwarya. Since he was never very close to Rani, even during Saathiya shooting, he allegedly asked Aishwarya to maintain a distance with Rani. When Rani got to know about this, she apparently confronted Vivek and they had a heated argument.

Rani Mukherji's brother held for molesting: There was a huge scandal in 2012 when the Versova police arrested Rani's brother Raja Mukherji for allegedly molesting a former TV professional and an aspiring film director. It is said that Raja promised the girl that he will introduce her to his sister- Rani Mukherji. Reports said that the victim wanted to direct a film for which she wanted to cast Rani. She approached Raja who, in turn, invited her to a cafe to listen to the script. However, he allegedly took her to an isolated spot in his car. While she was briefing him about the story, Raja reportedly groped and kissed her. Though this was not directly related to Rani, her name was dragged in the controversy.

Rani's affair with Govinda: Rani Mukerji was in an alleged relationship with her co-star Govinda during the filming of the movie Hadh Kar Di Aapne. Their affair turned out to be a scandal as Govinda was once spotted in Rani's room in a night dress, when a journalist had gone to visit Rani at her place, as reported by Masala.com. Also since Govinda was already married, this relationship was scorned by industry insiders. According to the rumours, Govinda had spent a lot of money in gifting her a high-end car, diamonds and a luxurious flat.
