High points

This pacer from Bagerhat began playing with a taped tennis ball. His potential was spotted in a pacer hunt programme in which the speed gun recorded him as the fastest.

Thereafter in domestic cricket it was frequently seen that batsmen would retire hurt because of his stock delivery.

On his ODI debut (January 2009) he made a major impact with his bouncers that put the batsmen on the defensive. Bangladesh won the match against Sri Lanka; Hossain contributed in a big way with 4 wickets for 33 in 5.3 overs.

On his Test debut (July 2009) against the West Indies he took 3 wickets.

'Sexual assault case'

In December 2014 film actress Naznin Akhtar [Akter] Happy filed a lawsuit against Rubel Hossain, accusing him of luring her into an affair with false promises of marriage. She said she and Hossain had been in a relationship [since roughly March 2014], but he refused to marry her.

At the time BD News Headline had reported, ‘According to [Naznin’s] statement, Rubel Hossain raped her several times promising to marry her… Actress Naznin Akter Happy wants Rubel Hossain arrested for allegedly cheating on her...What is wild about this is the law does not appear to cover dating more than one person, yet the police are looking for him. That could only mean this falls under what is called a “special reported case”.’

Although ‘victims’ of alleged rapes are usually entitled to anonymity , police waived reporting restrictions after Happy told the Bangladeshi media that she would drop the allegations if Rubel agreed to marry her

The allegation threatened to scupper Rubel's chances of appearing in the World Cup after he was remanded in custody by a court in Dhaka. But he was later granted bail until the end of the World Cup in view of “national interest“ as he was a key member of Bangladesh's team.

March 2015: Rubel did not let the nation down. He took four for 53 in the win over England in Adelaide, which enabled Bangladesh to qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time.

This brought him personal dividends as well. Happy said she had decided to forgive her former boyfriend who starred in a dramatic victory over England. “I've forgiven him. I am not going to continue the case against him,“ Happy told a TV channel the following day. “I am not going to give any testimony or evidence against (him). And if I don't carry on with the case, then there is no case.“

Her move came hours after her lawyer, Debul Dey, said he would no longer represent Happy as he did not want to put Rubel under pressure while he was representing his country in Australia and New Zealand.

In May 2015 a Bangladesh court threw out sexual assault charges filed by Happy against Hossain, and acquitted Rubel.

A police report which found no proof of the charges against Hossain was accepted by Dhaka's Fifth Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal, which also scrapped a "non-acceptance" plea by Happy.

Her new lawyer, Tuhin Hawlader, said they would appeal against the order in the High Court.
