Vijayanagara coins

July 22, 2018: The Times of India

A farm labourer in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh unearthed a pot of 17th-century gold coins from a field. Archaeologists later confirmed that the gold coins were in circulation between 1633 and 1646 in the Vijayanagara Empire.

Vaddula Satyanarayana Reddy, a farmer in Sanikavaram village, had asked farm labourer Pondugula Ramanarayana Reddy to dig a trench for laying water pipe in his field. While digging, Ramanarayana found a copper vessel with 30 gold coins. The coins are engraved with miniature portraits of Lord Venkateswara and Goddess Sridevi and Bhudevi on one side.
