New Delhi/Patna: Renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha’s Chhath devotional numbers became an inseparable part of the festival’s celebrations and she also lent her voice to Bollywood superhits such as Maine Pyaar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Gangs of Wasseypur II, report Avijit Ghosh &Jai Narain Pandey.

She passed away around 9.20 pm following complications caused by septicemia, AIIMS sources said. Tuesday was also the first day of this year’s Chhath festival.

“Very saddened by the passing away of well-known folk singer Sharda Sinha. Her Maithili and Bhojpuri songs have been very popular for many decades. The echoes of her melodious songs associated with Astha Ke Mahaparva Chhath will remain forever. Her death is an irreparable loss to the music world,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X.
Known as Bihar Kokila, the nightingale of Bihar, the widely-heard and much-respected singer was a Padma Bhushan recipient.

Her Chhath songs, over 60 in number, gave Bihar diaspora a sense of roots and belonging in different parts of the world. Her popular folk and devotional numbers played a seminal role in popularising and spreading Bhojpuri music.
