Perfect 10 in C.K. Nayudu U-23 fixture
Gaurav Gupta, Sidak does a Kumble, grabs ‘perfect 10’, November 4, 2018: The Times of India
When the 2018-19 domestic season kicked off, Puducherry, one of the new teams on the circuit, was engulfed in a big controversy after it had to withdraw eight outstation players after just one game in the Vijay Hazare Trophy due to the players not meeting the eligibility criteria.
Though, it was ironically an outstation player who made history for the southern team, enabling it to be in the news for the right reasons.
Left-arm spinner Sidak Singh, who had played seven T20s for Mumbai in 2015, did an Anil Kumble, albeit in a Colonel C.K. Nayudu U-23 fixture, when he grabbed all ten wickets in an innings against Manipur at the CAP Siechem Ground in Puducherry. The 19-year-old finished with astonishing figures of 17.5-7-31-10, as he spun out Manipur singlehandedly for 71. Three of the wickets were caught and bowled.
“I had never thought about achieving something like this. I had once taken nine wickets in an Under-16 match. I am happy with my feat,” an elated Sidak told TOI. “I am indebted to Damodaran Sir (former Cricket Association Of Puducherry secretary) who gave me the chance to play for the state. Our Under-23 coach, Abdul Jabbar and Vinod Raghavan, who was my coach in the Mumbai Under-19 team, and fought a lot for me. i just looked to bowl with discipline,” he added.
In 1999, Kumble had famously scalped a ten-four in the second Test against Pakistan at the Feroz Shah Kotla to equal Jim Laker’s feat.
Three years back, Sidak, at 15, had become the youngest to play for Mumbai after batting legend Sachin Tendulkar (who was 14 when he debuted for Mumbai in the 1980s) when he was named in the squad for the West Zone T20s. In his junior cricket days, the youngster’s career was often at crossroads because there were reports of him bowling with a suspect action.
