Tata’s Tamo Racemo– affordable sports car

In another innovative move to expand its brand portfolio, Tata Motors is making waves in the motoring world with that most dubious of animals-an affordable sports car. Unveiled at the recent Geneva International Auto Show, the new Tamo Racemo definitely looks the part.

"From styling and design to driver experience and technology, Racemo is an extension of customers' personalities, as part of their digital ecosystem and will break the ice with a radical new presence and pique the interest in the parent brand," said Tata Motors CEO Guenter Butschek at the unveiling ceremony.

Unlike international sports coupes, the Racemo was designed with Indian roads in mind-and so features a generous 165mm of road clearance. The two-seater comes equipped with twin airbags, and has ABS and EBD (anti-lock and electronic brakeforce distribution) braking systems as standard features. But the super sexy gullwing type doors (pictured below) are its true signature.

The car's muscle comes from a turbocharged and intercooled 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine that sits right behind the driver. Its power output is rated at 190bhp at 6,500rpm and its torque output stands at 210Nm at 2,500rpm. All of it is sent to the wheels using a 6-speed automated manual transmission. Tata has also included a paddle gear shift to give customers that proper sports car feel. Adding to that is the Racemo's 0-100 kmph number: a cool 6 seconds.

The concept car will be launched in two variants-the Racemo and the Racemo Plus-in limited numbers in India later this year. Prices have not as yet been finalised, but are expected to range between Rs 20-25 lakh. Which is affordable, for some.
