Bengaluru: Basavalinga Swamy, the 44-year-old head pontiff of Sri Kanchugal Bande Mutt, hanged himself from the window grill of the mutt’s puja house in Kempapura village near Magadi, Ramanagara district on Monday morning.


He became the head pontiff of the 400-year-old mutt in 1997 and celebrated his silver jubilee at the helm a few months ago.


Around 6am, some disciples found the seer hanging and Kudur police registered a case of unnatural death and shifted the body to the government hospital in Nelamangala. 
Cops handed over the body to the mutt after the postmortem. Police said the seer stayed in the puja house in front of the Sri Mahalingeshwara Swamy temple.

He was supposed to wake up early in the morning and conduct the puja.

Police found his three-page suicide note in the room. They said the seer had accu- sed some people of assassinating his character and even named a few. Police, however, did not reveal further details citing ongoing investigation. “We registered a case of abetment to suicide and are investigating,” Santosh Babu, Ramanagara SP, said.

Seer said to have been blackmailed

According to police sources, some miscreants are suspected to have blackmailed Swamiji over some issues. “We’ll question those who had been close to the Swamiji and had been in constant touch with him ove r phone. We learnt that some miscreants had made video calls to him and harassed him,” said a police officer.
Ramesh, the complainant and teacher at Bande Mutt school, told police he met the seer at 5pm Sunday and went home. He received a call from Ambarish, a mutt employ- ee, around 6.10am. Ambarish informed Ramesh that the seer was not opening his room and not taking his calls. Ramesh went to the rear of the room and found the seer hanging from the window grill.


Second seer in a year

Basavalinga Swamy is the second seer to die by suicide in Ramanagara district in a year. Chilume Mutt seer Basavalinga Swamy died by suicide a t his m utt on December 19, 2021. He was also found hanging from a window grill. He was reportedly upset o ver his d eteriorating health.
