A brief biography

November 12, 2018: The Times of India

Awarded Padma Bhushan for his contribution to development economics, Srinivasan was the Emeritus Samuel C. Park, Jr. Professor of Economics at Yale University.

He was also the chairman of the department of economics, a special adviser to the Development Research Center at the World Bank from 1977 to 1980. Srinivasan has taught at numerous institutions over the past four decades, including MIT, Stanford University and Indian Statistical Institute.

His reasearch paper, written along with Professor Jadgish Bhagwati, on trade liberalization formed the basis of India’s external sector reforms by Manmohan Singh’s team in 1991. A witty person who understood the limitations of markets and also recognized the role of the government.

In a tweet, former chief economic adviser Arvind Subramanian said: “His legacy: outstanding scholarship; principled belief in growth, free trade & multilateralism; unassuming; mentoring; and wit. A great TN quip: ‘Perfect examples of Self-Referential Systems are papers written by Indian economists’.”

Congress leader and former Union minister Jairam Ramesh, in his condolence tweet, said, “For almost 5 decades, he was a veritable guru to many. He never craved for public recognition and was immersed in the world of scholarship till the very end. What an inspiration he was!”
