Taikkyi

Northern township of Hanthawaddy District, Lower Burma, lying between 17° 3' and 17° 47' N. and 95° 45' and 96° 12' E., with an area of 898 square miles. The population was 48,084 in 1891, and 73,263 in 1901, dwelling in 470 villages. The western portion of the township is low-lying and thickly populated ; the eastern abuts on the Pegu Yoma, and has comparatively few inhabitants. The density is only 81 persons per square mile, as against the District average of 160. The proportion of Karens in the township is high. The head- quarters are at the village of Taikkyi (population, 1,643), on the Ran- goon-Prome railway, 41 miles from Rangoon. The area cultivated in 1903-4 was 262 square miles, paying Rs. 3,62,000 land revenue.
