Tanuku Taluk

Delta taluk of Kistna District, Madras, lying between 16° 35' and 16° 59' N. and 81° 23' and 81° 50' E., with an area of 371 square miles. The population in 1901 was 238,758, compared with 204,048 in 1891. It contains 174 villages, of which Tanuku is the head-quarters. The demand on account of land revenue and cesses in 1903-4 amounted to Rs. 11,79,000. The taluk is very fertile, and is commanded by the irrigation system from the Godavari river. Nidadavolu, at the end of the main canal and on the railway, contains a large rice factory. The chief crops are rice, other cereals, oil-seeds, and sugar-cane.
