Tapun

Northern township of Tharrawaddy District, Lower Burma, bordering on Prome District, lying between i8° 15’ and 18° 47' N. and 95° 22' and 95° 58' E., with an area of 694 square miles. Except in the east, where the forests of the Pegu Yoma cover the ground, it is a level plain. The population was 60,127 in 1891, and 67,589 in 1901. It contains 327 villages, of which the largest is Tapun (population, 1,697), the head-quarters, lying 9 miles to the west of the railway line, which runs north-west and south-east through the township. The area cultivated in 1903-4 was 97 square miles, paying Rs. 1,20,000 land revenue.
