Belgian Open: U-19 women’s singles title

Sabu Cherian, Sep 27, 2021: The Times of India

What’s the least you expect a badminton player who has played six matches a day prior to her final to do? Throw in the towel and concede the final without competing! Or contest the final without playing to her true best.

Shuttler Tasnim Mir, all of 16, did neither of these. In Brussels on Sunday, the Indian took to the court for the U-19 women’s singles final of Belgian Open, puked on the court while leading by a game and 18-10 in the second, before blazing past her opponent to win her third successive tournament over the past two months.

The Indian thrashed Antonia Schaller of Germany 21-10, 21-11 in the summit clash to win the Belgian Open tournament. Last week, she triumphed in France, winning the junior women’s singles title at FZ Forza Alpes International held at Voiron. In August, she had clinched the Bulgarian Junior Open Championship in Sofia.

Speaking to TOI after winning the title, Tasnim said, “ My body was tired and I was feeling extremely stiff. But, I managed to play. Though I vomitted on the court while leading 18-10 in the second game, I won easily in the end.”

16-year-old girl from [born c.2006] Gujarat Tasnim Mir gave the country a reasonto feel proud. She became the world No. 1 in the girls (U-19) singles category.

As per the Badminton World Federation (BWF) U-19 rankings r eleased on Wednesday, Tasnim has 10,810 points, which got her the top spot . The top ranking came a s a pleasant surprise for the 16year-old wanting to make the grade in the senior catego ry. Tasnim was ranked world No. 1 in the U-17 category too.

Tasnim told TOI from Guwahati. “I was not expecting this at all as I stopped playing in this age group. I was world No. 2 last year and never thought I wouldbecome No. 1,” she said.

It’s a feat which eluded even the likes of Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu. While Saina did not make the cut as BWF introduced the age group rankings in 2011, Sindhu’s highest ranking in the junior category was world No. 2.

Of her four junior international titles, three came last y ear. “I think winning titles in Dubai, Bulgaria and Nepal International helped me secure the ranking points. This will bolster my confidence,” Tasnim said.

Tasnim, who started training at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in 2017, shifted base to the Assam Badminton Academy in Guwahati in 2020 as her mixed doubles partner Ayan Rashid trains there. “I moved thereto train with my part- ner. I w ant to continue here,” she said.

Tasnim is being coached by Edwin Iriawan of Indonesia, who has also coached Saina Nehwal in the past.

Tasnim is now No. 602 in the senior rankings.

Tasnim started playing badminton at the age of seven with her father, badminton coach Irfan Ali Mir. Irfan, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) with Gujarat Police, r uns a coa ching centre in Mehsana, near Ahmedabad. Her brother Muhammed Ali Amir is also a badminton player and trains at the samea cademy in Guwahati.
