Kida vettu (goat sacrifice)

2017: Plea against ‘Kida Vettu’ quashed

‘Goat sacrifice conducted against the tenets of Agama Sastras’, July 25, 2017: The Hindu

The Madras High Court Bench dismissed a public interest litigation petition filed with a plea to restrain the trustee of Vairavanathaswamy Temple at Vairavanpatti in Tirupattur Taluk of Sivaganga district from resorting to k ida vettu (goat sacrifice) before the start of the temple’s car festival on Wednesday.

Personal scores

The First Division Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana refused to entertain the case without going into the propriety of such sacrifice and the period from when it was in practice since it, prima facie, appeared to the judges that the case had been filed, in the guise of a PIL petition, to settle personal scores.

The Bench pointed out that a second round of litigation was before it as the same petitioner, SP. Chinna Veerappan of Kundrakudi in Sivaganga district, had instituted a civil suit before a Sub Court in the district a few years ago to restrain C.T.S. Chidambaram, the sponsor, from conducting the car festival in 2010 and that suit had got dismissed for non prosecution.

In his affidavit, the petitioner had alleged that the goat sacrifice was conducted, against the the tenets of Agama Sastras, right in front of the deity seated on the temple car.

He contended that it was not appropriate to perform the “sacrilege” before the Lord who was considered to be the protector of all living and non living things.
