The Mumbaikar's sculptural art portrays and feeds off the chaos of the city. His empathies lie with the middle class and their struggle to make a living in a highly competitive urban space-whether it is the heroic dabbawala who delivers food to the city's hungry or the people who pack the trains. For the India Art Fair, Shende, 34, captured the crowded compartment of a Virar Fast local train. His sculptures, made of minute metal discs, copper-plated fibreglass and other unconventional materials, "capture the dichotomies of India", says Dinesh Vazirani of the auction portal Saffron Art.
