The dramatic economic transformation of India has not been accompanied by radical change in the position of women, who continue to face discriminatory norms and lack of opportunities in the social and economic spheres. That is reflected in the country’s placement towards the bottom of the Women, Peace and Security index that measures performance on conditions necessary for women’s empowerment and prosperity. The index, which ranks 153 countries and covers more than 98% of the world’s population, shows that India is lagging behind the global mean on key markers of Justice, Security and Inclusion.
