India clinch 3 gold, 1 bronze in World University Games:
Shooters led the show with three gold as India opened their account with four medals in the World University Games at Chengdu, China. Elavenil Valarivan, a silver medallist in the 2019 edition in Italy, bettered her performance to clinch the first gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle women’s event. New Delhi : The compound mixed archery team of Aman Saini and Pragati clinched a gold medal, India’s fourth in the event, at the World University Games in Chengdu, China. Aman and Pragati put up a brilliant show in the final to win the yellow metal, beating Korea’s Sua Cho and Seunghyun Park 157-156 in a thrilling summit clash.
The bronze was bagged by Mingching Lin and Z-wei Wu of Chinese Taipei. India are currently placed fourth in the medal standings with 10 medals including four gold, two silver and four bronze. The Indians won two more medals in archery in men’s and women’s compound team events.
While the men’s compound team of Sangampreet Bisla, Aman Saini and Rishabh Yadav won a bronze beating Korea’s Minchang Kwon, Hakjin Sim and Seunghyun Park 229-225, women’s compound trio of Purvasha, Pragati and Avneet lost 224-229 to Korea’s Sooin Sim, Seungyeon Han and Sua Cho in the final to settle for the silver. The bronze in this event was bagged by Yihsuan Lo, Yen-hua Hsu and Mingching Lin of Chinese Taipei.
Apart from archery, the Indians also bagged two medals in shooting. The trio of Vijayveer, Udayveer Si dhu and Adarsh Singh won a silver in the 25m rapid fire pistol team event with a cumulative score of 1729. Surya Pratap, Sartaj Singh and Aishwary Tomar won abronze in the 50m rifle team category. With 583 points, Vijayveer has a lso sailed to the individual final of the 25m rapid fire pistol event. New Delhi: Indian shooters and compound archers ruled the roost, bagging six medals including four gold at the World University Games in Chengdu, China. Shooters Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Divyansh Singh Panwar and Arjun Babuta joined forces to outclass local favourites China to win the 10m air rifle men’s team gold.
The Indian trio, with a combined score of 1894. 7, beat China’s Li Xinmiao, Song Buhan and Zhu Xiaozhong (1881. 9) to clinch the yellow metal while Kazakhstan finished third. Aishwary and Divyansh then made it a one-two finish in the 10m air rifle men’s individual event.
In a dominant display, Aishwary consistently shot scores in the higher 10s for a total of 252. 6 to snatch the gold as Divyansh had to be content with a silver. China’s Buhan was a distant third with a score of 229. 0
Compound archers also contributed to India’s tally, adding two golds and a bronze medal.
Avneet Kaur pipped USA’s Alyssa Grace Sturgill in a thrilling shoot off to clinch the compound women’s individual gold. After the scores were tied at 144-144, the gold medal match entered a shoot off. Sturgill was first to go, shooting a disappointing 8 while Avneet kept her calm to land a 10. Sangampreet Bisla and Aman Saini clinched the gold and bronze medals in the men’s individual event. Needing a nine to win, Sangampreet send the arrow to 10 to secure the gold medal, quashing South African Christian De Klerk’s hopes of a top finish. In the bronze medal match, Aman fended off a challenge from Frenchmen Bouleau Victor 148-146 to grab the last spot on the podium.
India are currently tied second in the medal standings with Japan. PTI

Chengdu (China): Indian shooters, led by Sift Kaur Samra, won four medals two gold, one silver and one bronze at the ongoing World University Games 2023. The 21-ye ar-old Samra, who had previously won the ISSF Junior World Cup, beat out fellow countrywoman Ashi Chouksey for the gold with a score of 462.9 in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions final. To win silver , Chouksey scored 461.6 points.
The four medals took India’s tally to 21 11 gold, four silver and six bronze. India are fourth on the medals table behind China, Korea and Japan. AGENCIES

Chengdu (China): India ended their World University Games (WUG) campaign with their best-ever performance, winning a record haul of 26 medals including 11 gold. This edition’s haul is even more than the combined total of all the past WUG medals won by the country. India had won just 21 medals (6 gold, 6 silver and 9 bronze) before. Hosts China topped the standings with a whopping 178 medals (103 gold, 40 silver, 35 bronze), followed by Japan (21 gold, 29 silver, 43 bronze) and Korea (17 gold, 18 silver, 23 bronze).

India finished seventh in the FISU World University Games 2023 standings with a best-ever haul of 26 medals – 11 gold, five silver and 10 bronze. The 31st edition of the World University Games was held in Chengdu, the People’s Republic of China, from July 28 to August 8.
India’s previous best performance at the World University Games came at Gwangju 2015, where Indian athletes won five medals – one gold, one silver and three bronze.
At the 2019 edition in Naples, India won four medals – one gold, one silver and two bronze. India have been part of the World University Games since the inaugural edition at Turin in 1959.
Close to 230 Indian athletes participated at the 2023 World University Games. Of the 26 medals won by India in Chengdu, as many as 14 medals - eight gold, four silver and two bronze - were won by India’s shooting contingent.
Rifle shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, a Tokyo Olympian, was the most successful Indian athlete at World University Games with four medals. Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar won gold medals in men’s 10m air rifle and 50m rifle 3 positions and was part of gold medal-winning men’s 10m air rifle team. He also won a bronze with the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions team.
Youth Olympic Games champion Manu Bhaker and Sift Kaur Samra also won multiple gold medals. Manu Bhaker bagged gold medals in the women’s 10m air pistol individual as well as the team event. Sift Kaur Samra mirrored Manu’s success in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions.
Indian archers, meanwhile, contributed seven medals, including three gold, to the tally. Avneet Kaur and Sangampreet Singh Bisla won individual gold medals in women's and men’s compound events, respectively. Aman Saini and Pragati combined to win a gold medal in the mixed compound team event.
Athletics, meanwhile, saw India claim four bronze medals. Jyothi Yarraji clocked a new national record to win the bronze medal in the women’s 100m hurdles. Amlan Borgohain (men’s 200m) and Bhavani Yadav (women's long jump) also won bronze medals.
Priyanka Goswami, silver medallist in the 10,000m walk at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Athletics Championships, led the Indian women’s 20km race walk team to a bronze.
Yamini Mourya, competing in women's 57kg, claimed India’s solitary bronze in judo. It was India’s first-ever judo medal at the World University Games.
