Entertainer Yusuf bids adieu to cricket

Chennai:

Allrounder Yusuf Pathan has announced his retirement from all formats of the game at the age of 38. The man from Baroda was a supreme entertainer capable of winning a game single-handedly with the bat as well as a handy off-spin bowler during his peak years. He played 57 ODIs and 22 T20Is for India and was part of two World Cup-winning sides – the 2007 World T20 in South Africa and the 50-over World Cup at home in 2011.

“The time has come today for me to put a full stop to this innings of my life. I officially announce retirement from all forms of the game,” he said in a statement posted on Twitter.

He also won the inaugural IPL title with Rajasthan Royals in 2008 before going on to add two more IPL titles to his trophy cabinet with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012 and 2014. He still holds the record of scoring the fastest hundred in the IPL by an Indian, having made a 37-ball ton for Rajasthan Royals against Mumbai Indians in 2010. His last appearance in the IPL came for Sunrisers Hyderabad during the 2019 edition.

Yusuf notably made his India T20I debut in the final of the 2007 World T20 against Pakistan, when he came in for an injured Virender Sehwag at the top of the order. While Yusuf only managed an 8-ball 15, the final will remain etched in the memories of the Pathan household as Irfan – Yusuf ’s younger brother – took 3/16 in four overs to claim the man-of-the-match award.

He played six games in the 2011 World Cup before being replaced by Suresh Raina for the quarterfinal clash against Australia. “Winning two World Cups for India and lifting Sachin Tendulkar on my shoulders were some of the best moments of my career,” Yusuf reflected.

While greater consistency with the bat may have helped Yusuf forge a longer career with the Indian team, he made sure that there was no shortage of entertainment whenever he was at the crease. His whirlwind 105 off 70 balls against South Africa in Centurion just prior to the 2011 World Cup was perhaps his best international innings.
