A multi-lingual Lok Sabha constituency

Sribala Vadlapatla, Here, netas must speak four tongues, March 24, 2019: The Times of India

The invisible lines separating four of India’s main languages — Telugu, Kannada, Marathi and Hindi — can blur at times given that they have many common words and expression. It is this blurring of lines that politicians use to survive in Zahirabad, a unique Lok Sabha constituency of Telangana, where candidates need working knowledge of all four languages to survive politically.

Some assembly constituencies of Zahirabad share borders with Maharashtra while others are close to Karnataka, as a result there are cultural influences of all three states on people living here.

Sitting TRS MP BB Patil, who was re-nominated by his party, boasts he can speak all four languages fluently. “Candidates who can’t speak at least three of the four languages will struggle to survive here,” he says. “You have to talk in local languages if you want the support of the people,” he explains.

Former Congress MP Suresh Kumar Shetkar, who won the seat in 2009 immediately after it was created, says his origin is Kannada who can talk Telugu. Both Patil and Shetkar’s mother tongue is Kannada. There is Andhra influence too on this seat in the area of Banswada where people having Andhra origin are more with their accent of Andhra touch to Telugu. In addition to four main languages, there is a small segment of tribals who speak Lambada language in the mandals of Gandhari and Lingala of Yellareddy assembly constituency falling under this Lok Sabha segment. Kamareddy has people speaking with a touch of Karimnagar dialect.

Zahirabad Lok Sabha seat includes the seven assembly segments of Zahirabad town, Andole, Narayankhed, Jukkal, Banswada, Yellareddy and Kamareddy. Zahirabad town and Narayankhed have Karnataka as their border and people using Kannada language are found in large numbers. Jukkal constituency has Maharashtra as border. Though Narayankhed has Karnataka as border, the influence of Marathi culture is visible.
