The 72 most popular/ significant Hindi-Urdu songs of 1962
A note on the credits
About the song Na tum hamein jaano from the film Baat Ek Raat Ki there is agreement only on the lyricist, Majrooh Sultanpuri. Hindi Geet Mala credits the music to Hemant Kumar. Prof. Anil Bhargava writes that the female singer was Lata Mangeshkar. Mr. Hamraaz’ book has a small typesetting error for the male version, which gives an initial impression that there was only a female version. So, Indpaedia turned to SaReGaMa to settle the debate and has reflected SaReGaMa’s credits.
Aarti
Was Aarti a 1961 film, as the jacket of Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein (Vol 18) states, or a 1962 film as ‘Sureela Safar’ writes and ‘Geet Kosh’ reiterates? The ten-year censor certificate of the print posted on YouTube was issued in August 1972, i.e. quite late in 1972. Therefore, the original must have been issued some time in 1962.

Naushad’s ultimate compliment to Madan Mohan
By the late 1940s and in the early 1950s Naushad had established himself not just as the king of high-quality popular music but he would top the charts as well. Therefore, his compliment to Madan Mohan was the highest of that era. And he was following a tradition set by good old Asad.
It is said that Ghalib once remarked that he would exchange his entire dîwãn (selected works) for the fourth shér (verse) of Momim Khan ‘Momin’s’ ghazal (poem) Asar usko zaraa. The verse in question was: Tum meré saath hoté ho goyã/ jab koi doosra nahîñ hota. (Hasrat Jaipuri would later use this couplet, minus the goyã, in a song that he wrote for Love in Tokyo/ 1966.)
Naushad so liked two ghazals from Anpadh that he made a similar offer to Madan Mohan: Take my entire corpus of work in exchange for these two ghazals, ‘Hai isi mein pyar ki aabroo’ and ‘Aap ki nazron ne samjha, pyar ke qaabil mujhe.’ Both were written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and sung by Lata Mangeshkar
Songs on the ‘next rung’
The Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein CDs list 11songs that were ‘in the shade’ (chhaoñ songs) this year. Prof Bhargava has compiled a list of 8 runners-up. The two lists have 2 songs in common. Thus, between the two, there are 17 unique songs in the ‘next rung.’
GC: Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein, a set of 50 CDs issued by Saregama in instalments that continued to be issued till 2012-13. This series concentrated on songs that ‘remained in the shadow’ (chhaoñ) of the main annual list of Binaca and its successor Geet Malas. These, thus, were the ‘next rung’ of songs, which were popular but did not make it to the main annual list.
AB: Bhargava, Anil, Binaca Geetmala ka Sureela Safar (Hindi; 2007; Rs.1,200), Vangmaya Prakashan, Jaipur-302015. vangmaya_jpr@yahoo.com)
Raags in songs
Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag throughout their length. Indpaedia volunteers have sometimes mentioned raags even when there is merely a hint of that raag in a song. (‘Raag’ is frequently spelt ‘raga,’ while ‘taal’ is also spelt ‘tal.’)
Wherever a taal has been mentioned, it is the one verified by ChandraKantha.com, and sometimes the raags, too.
