Sharaabi
A controversy
Filmmaker Dada Kondke was known for his vulgar, C- or even D- grade films and, thus, crude songs. A song, O Boribunder from his film Tere Mere Beech Mein, had the following lyrics: O Boribunder, chhupa kay choli kay andar maal jo rakha hai, arré, voh deti ja. 1984 was not as tolerant of cheap lyrics as 1993 (when the words ‘choli kay peechhay’ passed muster and propelled the song to the year’s no.1 position). In 1984 Kondke had to come up with a sanitised version for public radio that went O Boribunder, chhupa kay pallû kay andar maal jo rakha hai, arré, voh deti ja.
Hindi Geet Mala lists the ‘pallû’ version and Prof. Bhargava the ‘choli’ version.
Two notes about the credits
i) Who wrote the song Mujhe naulakha mangwa for the film Sharaabi ? A usually reliable book says: Anjaan and Prakash Mehra. However, SaReGaMa credits only Anjaan.
Secondly, the word is mañgwâ, not mañgâ.
ii) Who was the female singer in the song Pyar karne waley from the film Hero ? Anuradha Paudwal, says a usually reliable book. However, the SaReGaMa site credits the voice to Lata Mangeshkar.

Raags in songs
Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag throughout their length. Indpaedia volunteers have sometimes mentioned raags even when there is merely a hint of that raag in a song. (‘Raag’ is frequently spelt ‘raga,’ while ‘taal’ is also spelt ‘tal.’)
Wherever a taal has been mentioned, it is the one verified by ChandraKantha.com, and sometimes the raags, too.
