Sangam ‘s Bol Radha bol was the no.1 song of the 1964
A note on the credits
Who was the female singer in the song Mujhe kehte haiñ Kallu Qawwal from the film Dulha Dulhan? A usually reliable website says: Sudha Malhotra. However, Prof. Anil Bhargava, Mr. Harmandir Singh ‘Hamraaz’ and SaReGaMa all insist that it was Lata Mangeshkar. They are right, because Indpaedia checked the film’s credits out of an abundance of caution, and there was no mention of Sudha Malhotra.
Raags in songs
Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag throughout their length. Indpaedia volunteers have sometimes mentioned raags even when there is merely a hint of that raag in a song. (Raag is also spelt raga.)
There is a view that the song Aj-hooñ na ãye bãlma from the film Sanjh Aur Savera is based on Raag Sindhu Bhairavi. Indpaedia’s volunteers consulted Chandrakantha.com to settle the dispute. This scholarly site chose Raag Madhuvanti as the influence, which Indpaedia has adopted.
There is a similar divergence of views on Dost dost na raha from Sangam. Chandrakantha.com states that it is in Raag Bhairavi, while some musicologists feel it is based on Raag Shivranjani.

The next rung
The Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein CDs list twenty songs that were ‘in the shade’ (chhaoñ songs) this year. Prof Bhargava has compiled a list of ten runners-up. The two lists have one song in common. Thus, between the two, there are 29 unique songs in the ‘next rung.’
GC: Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein is a set of 50 CDs issued by Saregama in instalments that continued into 2012-13. The set concentrated on songs that had ‘remained in the shadow’ (chhaoñ) of the main annual list of Binaca and its successor Geet Malas. These, thus, were the ‘next rung’ of songs, which were popular but did not make it to the main annual list.
