The 94 most popular/ significant Hindi-Urdu songs of 1965

Shaheed (1965)
This cult film gave the highest return on investment in 1965 and one of the highest, after Dosti, in that group of years
Left to right: Prem Chopra, Manoj Kumar and friend

Shaheed was a cult favourite

Three notes about the credits

Shaheed: a cult favourite

i) Who was the female singer in the song Arrey yaar méré tum bhi ho ghazab from the film Teen Devian? Lata Mangeshkar, writes an otherwise reliable book. Asha Bhosle, insist Hindi Geet Mala and Mr. Harmandir Singh ‘Hamraaz.’ They are right, because SaReGaMa, too, supports them.

ii) Who sang the song Dekho, ab to for the film Janwar ? The SaReGaMa site very casually attributed it to ‘Asha Bhosle, chorus.’ Binaca Geetmala ka Sureela Safar credited it to Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Balbir, S.D. Batish. Hindi Film Geet Kosh agreed with ‘Safar.’ Indpaedia re-confirmed with the film’s credit titles and, indeed, Balbir and S.D. Batish have sung for the film.

iii) Saanson ke taar par, the title song of Geet Gaaya Pattharon Ne was sung by the legendary classical singer Kishori Amonkar, and not by Asha Bhosle, as stated by a very scholarly and otherwise reliable website.

A note about pronunciation

In both versions of the song Pardesiyoñ se na akkhiyañ milâna from the film Jab Jab Phool Khile the folk pronunciation akkhiyañ has been used, instead of the classical añkhiyañ, as written in some of the sources consulted.

The next rung

The Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein CDs list 26 songs that were ‘in the shade’ (chhaoñ songs) this year. Prof Bhargava has compiled a list of 12 runners-up. The two lists have two songs in common. Thus, between the two, there are 36 unique songs in the ‘next rung.’

GC: Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein is a set of 50 CDs issued by Saregama in instalments that continued into 2012-13. The set concentrated on songs that had ‘remained in the shadow’ (chhaoñ) of the main annual list of Binaca and its successor Geet Malas. These, thus, were the ‘next rung’ of songs, which were popular but did not make it to the main annual list.

AB: Bhargava, Anil, Binaca Geetmala ka Sureela Safar (Hindi; 2007; Rs.1,200), Vangmaya Prakashan, Jaipur-302015. vangmaya_jpr@yahoo.com)

AD: Ashok Da Ranade, "Hindi Film Song: Music Beyond Boundaries"

Raags in songs

Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag throughout their length. Indpaedia volunteers have sometimes mentioned raags even when there is merely a hint of that raag in a song. (Raag is also spelt raga.)
