Latest revision as of 17:07, 9 May 2023

Saira Bano in Shagird.
Here she is seen lip-syncing the song Ruk ja ae hava. Shagird not only had the no.1 hit song of 1968, the film was the no.5 box-office hit of 1967.
See Hindi-Urdu films: 1967
However, it was Brahmachari (1968) that swept Filmfare’s music awards with its emotionally stirring lullaby, Main gâooñ tum so jao, the prelude of which was loosely adapted from Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no.3.
Rajshri was the official heroine of the film but perhaps her sudden marriage to a North American required her role to be curtailed.
Here Shammi Kapoor and Mumtaz are seen dancing to Binaca Geet Mala’s no.4 hit of the year, Aaj kal terey merey pyaar kay charchay.
At the box-office, Brahmachari was the no. 7 hit film of the year.

[edit] The next rung

The Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein CDs list 15 songs that were ‘in the shade’ (chhaoñ songs) this year. Prof Bhargava has compiled a list of 14 runners-up. The two lists have three songs in common. Thus, between the two, there are 26 unique songs in the ‘next rung.’

GC: Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein is a set of 50 CDs issued by Saregama in instalments that continued into 2012-13. The set concentrated on songs that had ‘remained in the shadow’ (chhaoñ) of the main annual list of Binaca and its successor Geet Malas. These, thus, were the ‘next rung’ of songs, which were popular but did not make it to the main annual list.

[edit] Raags in songs

Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag throughout their length. Indpaedia volunteers have sometimes mentioned raags even when there is merely a hint of that raag in a song. (Raag is also spelt raga.)
