The 69 most popular/ significant Hindi-Urdu songs of 1971

A major disagreement on ranks

Achha To Hum Chalte Hain from Aan Milo Sajna (1970)
Asha Parekh is in a panic because she is late for her date
Behind her is Srinagar’s Dal Lake

An otherwise reliable website lists Taron mein sajke apne sooraj se sung by Mukesh at no.26. However, volume 33 of GC plays (and Prof Bhargava agrees) Mann ki pyas mere mann say na nikali, also from Jal Bin Machhli Nritya Bin Bijli at no. 26.

This reliable website states that the version of Khiltey hain gul yahan khilke bikharne ko (from Sharmilee) played on BGM was the Lata Mangeshkar version. Not true. On volume 33 of GC it was the Kishore version that was played.

The practice with BGM was that no matter which version was played during the end-of-the-year broadcast, both versions were given equal credit. Indpaedia has tried to continue with this rule even on non-Geetmala charts.

Now the major problems begin. Hindi Geet Mala (HGM) and Prof Bhargava (AB) agree fully on the ranks of 30 of the Top 32 songs of the year (and on the rank of another song, Khiltey hain gul yahan, if not on the version). The ranks given on vol. 33 of Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein are quite different from no.10 to 17. Obviously, the GCM ranks have to be taken as the correct ones. However, out of respect for Prof Anil Bhargava’s scholarship and Hindi Geet Mala’s formidable database, we have mentioned their ranks, too.

The next rung

The Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein CDs list 17 songs that were ‘in the shade’ (chhaoñ songs) this year. Prof Bhargava has compiled a list of 10 runners-up. The two lists have no songs in common. Thus, between the two, there are 27 unique songs in the ‘next rung.’

In addition, GC played snatches from Prem ke pujari hum hain from the 1970 film Prem Pujari as a tribute to Sachin Dev Burman, which Indpaedia has placed in the 1970 list.

GC: Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein is a set of 50 CDs issued by Saregama in instalments that continued into 2012-13. The set concentrated on songs that had ‘remained in the shadow’ (chhaoñ) of the main annual list of Binaca and its successor Geet Malas. These, thus, were the ‘next rung’ of songs, which were popular but did not make it to the main annual list.

AB: Bhargava, Anil, Binaca Geetmala ka Sureela Safar (Hindi; 2007; Rs.1,200), Vangmaya Prakashan, Jaipur-302015. vangmaya_jpr@yahoo.com)

Raags in songs

Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag or taal throughout their duration. Indpaedia volunteers have often mentioned raags and taals even when there is merely a hint of that raag or taal in a song. (‘Raag’ is frequently spelt ‘raga,’ while ‘taal’ is also spelt ‘tal.’)

Wherever a taal has been mentioned, Indpaedia’s volunteers have crosschecked it with (Raag David Courtney/ ChandraKantha.com, and sometimes the raags, too.
