The story of the no.1 hit of the year

As told by Rahul Dev Burman to Amin Sayani

The song Dum maro dum was born out of an idea that lyricist Anand Bakshi had. He felt that since the film had a dance segment (‘dance portion,’ as he called it) he suggested to Rahul Dev Burman that they should have a song there. Pancham (as RDB was nicknamed) replied, ‘Barha achchha dum maar rahey hain aap [There is dum (strength) in your suggestion.]’

Dum also means ‘puff’ (as in puffing on a weed).

That gave Bakshi the words that he was looking for. Rahul Dev Burman recalls that Bakshi was ready with the lyrics within five minutes.

The next day when they presented the song to Dev Anand, who was the producer and director of the film, he rejected the song. Anand’s reasoning was that the song went ‘against the situation’ in the film. (‘Situation’ is the Filmistani word for a particular moment in the story of a film.) Burman and Bakshi canvassed many members of Hare Rama Hare Krishna’s ‘unit’ [crew], including supporting actress Zeenat Aman, who was to ‘sing’ (lip-sync) the song on the screen, to persuade Anand.

As a compromise Anand agreed to put the song on the film’s soundtrack album but not in the film itself. Ultimately he relented and allowed the song’s refrain and one verse in the film: and that is the way it was. The complete 4:25 song is heard only on the album.

What a blunder Anand almost made.

The song Dum maro dum went on to play a huge part in the success of the film Hare Rama Hare Krishna. It was way more popular than the film itself.

(Hare Rama Hare Krishna was the first of the two successful films that Dev Anand made in his very long career as director, and the song was more successful than the film itself. Des Pardes was his only other success.)

A note about the credits

Who sang the song Phoolon ka taaron ka for the film Hare Rama, Hare Krishna ? Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, yes, but was Rahul Dev Burman’s the male (i.e. the father’s) voice in the Lata Mangeshkar (i.e. childhood) version? Binaca Geetmala ka Sureela Safar says, yes, it was Pancham’s voice. However, a usually reliable website suggests that this, too, was Kishore Kumar’s voice (it credits the music of this song alone to papa Sachin Dev Burman, therefore, its data entry people have obviously not seen the disc or film itself).

The arbitration of SaReGaMa was pointless. It lists two versions of the song, both attributed to and sung by Kishore Kumar. The Hindi Film Geet Kosh supports Binaca Geetmala ka Sureela Safar: the male voice on the Lata version is that of Rahul Dev Burman.

The film’s credits do not list the singers: though they make it clear that Rahul Dev Burman was the film’s sole music director.

Therefore, Indpaedia turned to the song itself. The voice is not Pancham’s better-known Satchmo-ish buffo basso. It is, instead, a gentler, Manna Deyish voice—obviously, Pancham Da in a mellow mood. It is certainly not Kishore Kumar.

An Urdu expression

Muqattã is an Arabic, indeed, an Islamic word.

There are 114 chapters in the Holy Qur’an. 29 of these chapters begin with mysterious letters, e.g. A, L, M (in Arabic, of course). Each such letter is a muqattã, the plural being muqatta’at. These letters are also seen as fawātih or "openers" because they are the opening letters or words of their respective chapters.

Imam Amin Ahsan Islahi, a Qur'anic scholar, has pointed out that the Arabs used such letters in their poetry even before the revelation of the Holy Qur’an. Later Persian poets, too, used such 'fragments' (qit'a) in their poetry.

In Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein (vol.35, track 1) you will hear Meena Kumari use the term muqattã for the opening verse of the song Thârhé rahiyo from the film Pakeezah. This ‘opening verse’ (Chândni raat) is a work of high poetry in itself and yet the song can be (and often is) sung without it. Above all, it was not written by Majrooh Sultanpuri, the poet who composed the song, but, as often happens, was added by the film’s producer, Kamal Amrohi. (Interestingly, during Meena Kumari’s conversation with him, Ameen Sayani uses the expression qata’a, instead.)

A note about Pakeezah’s credits

A highly respected, scholarly website has credited the music of several songs from the film Pakeezah to ‘Ghulam Mohammad/ Naushad.’ Not correct. No song from the film was composed jointly by the two. Ghulam Mohammad composed the six hit songs from the film while Naushad, separately, composed the four haunting ‘background songs’ (‘Kaun gali gayo Shyãm,’ ‘Moré sãjan,’ the alaap etc.). Ghulam Mohammad also composed the nine songs that were (wisely) not used in the film but were issued on a separate long playing record called Pakeezah Rang Barang. (Wisely, for they were not in the same league.) Because of Pakeezah’s phenomenal success many people bought the Rang Barang LP, to play it once and never dared play it again.

The alaap used during the credit titles is set in raag Mishra Pilu.

The next rung

The Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein CDs list 15 songs that were ‘in the shade’ (chhaoñ songs) this year. Prof Bhargava has compiled a list of 8 runners-up. The two lists have no songs in common. Thus, between the two, there are 23 unique songs in the ‘next rung.’

GC: Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein is a set of 50 CDs issued by Saregama in instalments that continued into 2012-13. The set concentrated on songs that had ‘remained in the shadow’ (chhaoñ) of the main annual list of Binaca and its successor Geet Malas. These, thus, were the ‘next rung’ of songs, which were popular but did not make it to the main annual list.

Raags in songs

Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag throughout their length. Indpaedia volunteers have sometimes mentioned raags even when there is merely a hint of that raag in a song. (Raag is also spelt raga.)
