The 74 most popular/ significant Hindi-Urdu songs of 1967

Two notes about the credits

i) Who wrote the lyrics of the song Hum intezaar karenge in the film Bahu Begum? A usually reliable website says: Majrooh Sultanpuri. Prof. Bhargava writes Sahir Ludhianvi and SaReGaMa agrees.

ii) Who wrote the lyrics of the song Gariboñ ki suno in the film Dus Lakh ? A usually reliable website says: Prem Dhawan. However, Prof. Bhargava credited musician Ravi. Mr. ‘Hamraaz’ and Prof. Bhargava normally agree with each other, as they do in this case as well. Seeking the arbitration of SaReGaMa was useless because it simply put an N/A in the credits.

Ravi is the correct answer also because the musician’s biographies tell us that he started his career with the ‘beggar song’ 'Ek paisa dé dé o babu...' in Devendra Goel's 'Vachan' in 1955. Gariboñ ki suno in the same Devendra Goel's Dus Lakh (1966) was generally seen as the second part of that two-song series.

Incidentally, Avijit Ghosh reminds us in The Times of India, ‘The number, Garibon ki suno woh tumhari sunega, tum ek paisa doge woh dus lakh dega, was often sung by beggars on trains and traffic intersections till inflation took its toll on the words.’

The next rung

The Gîtmala ki Chhaon Mein CDs list 25 songs that were ‘in the shade’ (chhaoñ songs) this year. Prof Bhargava has compiled a list of eight runners-up. The two lists have four songs in common. Thus, between the two, there are 29 unique songs in the ‘next rung.’

GC: Gîtmala ki Chhaon Mein is a set of 50 CDs issued by Saregama in instalments that continued into 2012-13. The set concentrated on songs that had ‘remained in the shadow’ (chhaoñ) of the main annual list of Binaca and its successor Geet Malas. These, thus, were the ‘next rung’ of songs, which were popular but did not make it to the main annual list.

AB: Bhargava, Anil, Binaca Geetmala ka Sureela Safar (Hindi; 2007; Rs.1,200), Vangmaya Prakashan, Jaipur-302015. vangmaya_jpr@yahoo.com)

Raags in songs

Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag throughout their length. Indpaedia volunteers have sometimes mentioned raags even when there is merely a hint of that raag in a song. (Raag is also spelt raga.)
