The 46 most popular Hindi-Urdu songs of 1982
The lyrics (and even singing) credits of many songs in the 1982 BGM finals were a matter of dispute among various sources, especially the names of the lyricists of Prem Rog, Deedar e Yaar, Mahaan…
For 1981 some sources claimed that Namak Halal’s songs were composed by Kalyanji-Anandji! We have verified most credits with the original film. However, we welcome all further information as messages sent to our Facebook page Indpaedia.com

Male Playback:
1. Kishore Kumar - 14 songs
2. Mohammed Rafi - 4 songs
3. R D Burman, S. P. Balsubramaniam and SureshWadkar - 3 songs each
4. Amit Kumar and Zoheb Hassan - 1 song each
Female Playback
1. Asha Bhosle - 12 songs
2. Lata Mangeshkar - 6 songs
3. Nazia Hasan, Rajeshwari and Usha Uthup - 1 song each.
Analysis by Hamara Forums
1. Laxmikant-Pyarelal and R D Burman continued their heated rivalry with the latter inching closer to the former.
2. Mohammed Rafi made his last appearance on Binaca Geetmala for a while. Two years after his death he still had 4 songs on the annual charts. His next appearance would be with Mohabbat Zinda rehti hai from Love and God in 1986. Kishore Kumar’s dominance continued unabated. Asha Bhosle was the queen bee amongst the female playback singers, and Laxmikant's daughter Rajeshwari makes a memorable debut on the charts.
3. In 1982, we witnessed the most heated competition for the top spot, with the top two songs separated by 1 point [in BGM’s calculations for the top songs]
A note about the credits
Who sang the song Yeh din to aata hai in the film Mahaan? A usually reliable book simply writes, ‘Kishore.’ The book has to be wrong because this is mainly a female song. Hindi Geet Mala credits it to Asha Bhosle, R D Burman, which is closer to the truth. Indpaedia turned to YouTube for arbitration. Shemaroo has posted the song there with the same credits as Hindi Geet Mala. i.e. Asha Bhosle, R D Burman. The voice is, indeed, not Pancham’s usual buffo basso, and is almost as smooth as Kishore Kumar’s. Apparently even Shemaroo had initially credited it to Kishore Kumar, because many of those who wrote in the ‘comments’ section demanded that Kishore’s name be replaced by RD’s. Indpaedia, therefore, concurs with Hindi Geet Mala/ Shemaroo.

Raags in songs
Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag or taal throughout their duration. Indpaedia volunteers have often mentioned raags and taals even when there is merely a hint of that raag or taal in a song. (‘Raag’ is frequently spelt ‘raga,’ while ‘taal’ is also spelt ‘tal.’)
